Who it’s for

The South Dakota Lottery suits adults aged 18 or older who buy in person and want to avoid state tax on a win. Video lottery players must be 21. It is a weaker fit for players who want online purchase or guaranteed privacy.

How it works

The lottery is based at 711 E. Wells Ave, Pierre. There are no mail, phone or internet ticket sales. The only app is for claims, not for buying.

Draw games are the national set: Powerball at $2, Mega Millions at $5, Millionaire for Life at $5 and Lotto America at $1. We did not record South Dakota-only draw games in our fact sheet.

Odds and value

All of South Dakota’s draw games use the national odds. Powerball’s jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338 with any prize at 1 in 24.87. Mega Millions is 1 in 290,472,336 and 1 in 23. Millionaire for Life is 1 in 22,910,580 for $1,000,000 a year for life or $18 million cash. Lotto America’s jackpot is 1 in 25,989,600 with any prize at 1 in 9.63.

Because South Dakota adds no games of its own to our table, the value question is mostly about tax and claims, not odds. See our methodology.

Trust and regulation

We found no regulatory actions against the lottery on the pages we checked. The helpline is 1-800-GAMBLER. We did not verify a beneficiary, so we do not say where proceeds go.

Claiming prizes and taxes

Draw and scratch prizes expire after 180 days. The claims app handles prizes from $101 to $5,000. Larger prizes need a different route that we did not detail.

Federal tax of 24% is withheld on prizes over $5,000. South Dakota does not tax winnings with a state income tax, so the state share is zero. That compares with 3% in Louisiana, 4% in Colorado and Virginia, and 7.25% in Minnesota.

Privacy is conditional. The lottery honours anonymity requests, but a winner’s name and city can be released under an open-records request, citing SDCL 42-7A-50.1. That is weaker than Montana or Delaware, where the law protects the name more firmly. See the South Dakota state page.

Playing online

You cannot buy online from the lottery. We did not find any courier apps listed for South Dakota in our state data, and Jackpocket does not list South Dakota among its states.

Treat any site that offers South Dakota tickets with suspicion. Powerball’s FAQ warns that lotteries may refuse to pay on tickets bought from any site other than their own.

Our take

South Dakota is a no-frills retail lottery with one real advantage, no state tax on winnings, and one real caution, that a name can be released on request. The 180-day window and lack of online sales are ordinary for a retail state. For a player who wants to keep a win quiet, Montana or Delaware offers firmer protection. See our guides.
