State lotteries
Forty-five states, the District of Columbia and two territories run their own lotteries. Each one sets its own games, prices, claim rules, tax treatment and winner-privacy law. We review them all on the same six criteria.

How state lotteries differ
Every state lottery sells Powerball and Mega Millions, so the headline jackpots are the same wherever you buy. What changes is everything around the ticket: whether you can buy online, how long you have to claim, whether your name becomes public, how much state tax comes off a big win, and where the money goes. A $1 ticket in one state may fund public schools; in another it funds the general budget or pensions.
What we score
We weigh odds and value most heavily, then transparency and player protection. A lottery that publishes odds for every game, reports its payout percentage, lets you set limits and shut yourself out, and gets its draws independently audited will score well. One that hides its odds behind a PDF or has had recent regulatory trouble will not. The full rubric is public.
Before you buy
Check your state's rules page for claim deadlines and anonymity before you play, not after. A large prize in a state that requires public disclosure is a life-changing event in more ways than one.
How we rate. Scored on a published six-criterion rubric. Every figure links to an official source and shows the date it was checked. We sell nothing. Methodology
