Who it’s for

The Vermont Lottery suits residents who buy in person and want a one-year claim window. It is a weaker fit if you want detailed published data, because we found little on odds, beneficiaries or privacy. We could not verify a minimum age or official online sales.

How it works

The Vermont Lottery Commission runs the lottery. It publishes its rules and FAQ online, and takes part in the Tri-State games Megabucks and Gimme 5. Draw games include Powerball at $2, Mega Millions at $5 and Millionaire for Life at $5.

We did not find a founding year, headquarters or regulator on the pages we checked, and we do not state them.

Odds and value

The national games carry the usual odds. Powerball’s jackpot is 1 in 292,201,338 and any prize is 1 in 24.87. Mega Millions is 1 in 290,472,336 and 1 in 23. Millionaire for Life is 1 in 22,910,580 for the top prize and 1 in 8.46 for any prize.

We did not record published odds for Megabucks or Gimme 5 in our fact sheet. Maine, which also sells Megabucks, publishes 1 in 4,496,388 for the jackpot and 1 in 5.9 for any prize on its Megabucks Plus game, but we do not assume Vermont’s version matches. See the methodology.

Trust and regulation

We found no regulatory actions on the pages we checked. The helpline is 1-800-GAMBLER. Where the proceeds go is not published on the pages we checked.

The lottery’s data transparency is the weakest part of the review. It posts its rules as a document, which is a plus, but we found fewer figures than for neighbours that publish odds and fund totals.

Claiming prizes and taxes

Draw prizes can be claimed within 365 days, and instant prizes within one year after the game ends. Jackpot winners choose between cash and an annuity within 60 days.

Withholding is 24% federal plus 6% Vermont on prizes over $5,000. A 7.2% rate applies to non-resident aliens. We did not find a stated anonymity rule. See the Vermont state page.

Playing online

We could not verify official online ticket sales for Vermont, and our state data lists no courier apps for the state. Jackpocket does not list Vermont among its states. In practice, that points to a retailer purchase.

If you see a site offering Vermont tickets, check that the lottery itself operates it. Powerball’s FAQ warns that lotteries may refuse to pay on tickets bought from any site other than their own.

Our take

Vermont is a plain, retail lottery with a generous claim window and a middling state withholding rate. The reason for the modest score is not what the lottery does but how little it publishes. A Vermont player gets the same national games as anyone, so choose it on convenience. Our guides explain what to check on a ticket.
